Swearing In Ceremony of Mount Laurel Mayor Stephen Steglik and First South Asian Woman Deputy Mayor Fozia Janjua

New Jersey State Assembly Majority Whip Carol Murphy (D- Mount Laurel) this afternoon administered the oath of office to Mount Laurel Mayor Stephen Steglik, who made history in 2021 as the youngest Mayor to serve Mount Laurel.

“I’m proud of the leadership during the past two years in Mount Laurel from Kareem Pritchett and Stephen Steglik, and have tremendous confidence in Councilwoman Fozia Janjua stepping forward in a new leadership role as Deputy Mayor,” said State Assembly Majority Whip Carol Murphy. “The smooth transition of teaming Stephen Steglik as Mayor and Councilwoman Janjua as Deputy Mayor will provide effective continuity as a new era of leadership begins in Mount Laurel.  Councilwoman Janjua has brought a fresh perspective, which has lifted up our entire community and is worthy of this important promotion. The honor, integrity and community first approach to government embodied by Stephen Steglik and Fozia Janjua make them the best choice to lead our township in 2023.”

Mayor Stephen Steglik said, “Today we continue the progress this council has made over the past two years. Our growing township continues to be the perfect place to raise a family, start a small business, and grow as a diverse community. Working together with Deputy Mayor Fozia Janjua and Township Council members, we will continue to provide leadership that is transparent and works for everyone. It is a great honor and privilege to serve as Mayor once again, and this Council will continue to work towards a new era of leadership that is transparent, diverse, and responsive. We will continue to push forward policies that help our local economy and businesses, improve infrastructure, and bring leadership that is thoughtful and community driven”.

Mayor Mohamed T. Khairullah administered the oath of office to Deputy Mayor Fozia Janjua. Deputy Mayor Janjua commented on the success of 2022, “One of the promises of the Township Council was to create events that empowered our community and made residents feel connected. Whether it was our 150th Celebration, Food Truck Festival, or the Tree Lighting, working with Township management has led us to create a government that brings everyone together”

During 2022 Township Council continued to celebrate old and new events, with a focus on inclusion for all families and residents to enjoy. The Diversity and Inclusion Board, one of the creations of the Township Council, continued to foster relationships with events like Discussions and Desserts. Events that bring residents together continue to empower the community and show that local government works and represents residents of all backgrounds.

Mayor Stephen Steglik and Deputy Mayor Fozia Janjua will continue to work for the Mount Laurel community and build on the progress the Township Council has created.
